28 Hours

One course path, two required training parts.

Students see the full requirement up front: complete 20 hours online, then finish the required 8-hour in-person range/classroom portion.

Online First

Build the classroom foundation before range day.

The online portion includes guided lessons, interactive activities, lesson quizzes, progress tracking, and a comprehensive final written exam.

In Person Required

The final 8 hours cannot be completed online.

Live-fire training, practical skills, qualification, and in-person classroom reinforcement must be completed face to face with the academy.

IDFPR Focus

Organized around Illinois armed-security firearm training topics.

The online curriculum is built around required classroom subjects: law, authority, liability, ethics, safety, force decisions, scenarios, and readiness.

Class Forming

Range sessions form when enough students are ready.

GSA schedules the in-person portion after at least 6 students have completed the online portion and are ready to attend.

Certificate Path

Online completion is documented after the written exam.

Students who complete the online portion and pass the final exam receive the online completion certificate path before the required in-person step.

Built to feel serious, organized, and easy to follow.

Students should not have to guess where to begin, what to study next, or how the final exam fits into completion. This page sets the expectation, then the course platform carries them through the lesson path.

Success Highlight

Students start immediately with the online classroom portion instead of waiting for range day to begin learning.

Success Highlight

The required in-person portion includes live-fire range work, classroom reinforcement, instructor observation, and qualification expectations that cannot be replaced online.

Success Highlight

What students ask before they enroll.

Can I start the course today?

View answer

Yes. You begin the 20-hour online classroom immediately. The required 8-hour in-person range and classroom session is scheduled once a group of ready students forms.

What does the $200 cover?

View answer

One enrollment covers the full 28-hour path: the complete online classroom, interactive activities, quizzes, the final written exam, and preparation for the in-person session.

Is the 28-hour course fully online?

View answer

No. 20 hours are online and 8 hours are required in person for range qualification and classroom reinforcement, as required for armed training.

Do I need the 20-hour basic course first?

View answer

Requirements depend on your situation and IDFPR rules. Contact the academy through our contact page and we will confirm the right path for you before you enroll.

In-Person 8-Hour Range & Classroom

The 28-hour firearm course is not complete online. IDFPR firearm training requires the final 8 hours to be completed in person so students can demonstrate safety, handling, live-fire qualification, and instructor-observed readiness.

Why In Person

Live-fire skills must be observed.

Range safety, firearm handling, qualification, and practical skills require face-to-face instructor supervision. Online lessons prepare students, but they do not replace the required in-person training.

Scheduling

Classes form with 6 ready students.

GSA Shield Academy schedules the range/classroom day after a minimum of 6 students have completed the online portion and are ready. Students will be notified when a class is formed.

What To Bring

Arrive prepared for range day.

Students should bring required identification, online completion confirmation, approved firearm and holster, duty belt, factory ammunition, eye/ear protection, and range-appropriate clothing.

Safety Rules

Instructor commands control the range.

Students must follow all range commands, maintain muzzle awareness, keep fingers off triggers until directed and ready, load/unload only on command, and report safety concerns immediately.

Next Steps After Online Completion

  1. Complete all online lessons, interactive activities, quizzes, and the 50-question final written exam.
  2. Wait for GSA Shield Academy notification once at least 6 online-complete students are ready.
  3. Prepare required range equipment, safety gear, documentation, and professional range clothing.
  4. Attend the 8-hour in-person range/classroom session and complete instructor-observed requirements.

Start the 28-hour IDFPR firearm training path today.

Pay once to begin the 20-hour online portion. After online completion and the written exam, GSA will notify students when the required 8-hour in-person range/classroom session is formed with at least 6 ready students.
